Watanoha town is located in Ishinomaki city in Miyagi Prefecture. This place was used to be one of the largest marine product processing industries in Japan. But the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 catastrophically damaged this place.

While depopulation due to move-out after the disaster and population aging among survived residents advanced, this project tried to propose possible future directions of the community through the development of various ideas from field survey that studied what can do to revitalize the community. The problems that this place confronted may happen everywhere in Japan. One of the conditions of sustainable local community is resilience that can revive again by ideas no matter what disaster happens. This project also had the purpose of finding the principle model of sustainable local community. This project is also a collaboration project with ‘Tamanatcha project’ that Ishinomaki’s local NPO called Smile Seed sponsors.
